The work in short
With echoes of folk art and reverberating with carnival din, Nicole St-Pierre’s colourful paintings are a portal to a magical, childlike world of sound and movement. Enamoured of clowns and animals, of whimsical settings and bright tones, she fills her compositions with stylized birds and dogs, with tables laden with food and wine, and grand vases bursting with flowers. But lest we think this is but fun art, St-Pierre draws us in with her textured surfaces and bold application of colour.
Her busy compositions provide endless visual exploration, each hinting at a larger canvas, as if but at the beginning of a great creative adventure. Playful and marvelously balanced despite their many elements, St-Pierre’s paintings vibrate with energy, regardless of format. From large to small, whether still life or portraits, her works are executed with audacity of gesture and form, her style original and modern, and refreshingly unpretentious
