All summer long, before taking off for New Dehli for her next solo exhibition, Pauline Gagnon and her paintbrush take over the Gallery Lydia Monaro. Live, following up her work on the poster of the Portrait of the Comtesse Varvara Musina Pushkina found in the Parisian métro, Pauline is again addressing the same genre and format (2m66) her own way.
The artist declares: «I am taking the works of Ingres and other Classics to reinvent their models, asking myself how would I paint them if I met them today. »
Cut out from books or old magazines, touched up with pencils, cut up again, then printed in large format before being silk-screened on canvas, these images modernized according to the taste of the artist keep the characteristic imposing verticality of the Parisian metro posters.
Pictorial reorganization, change of colors, faces: everything is revised and reinterpreted. Overstepping the poster’s border, letters and words are written on the canvas and give it a poetical touch typical of the artist.
The countess had started a promising series… Don’t miss the opportunity of meeting Pauline Gagnon at the Gallery. She is currently working on a work by Jean-Auguste Dominique Ingres, Madame Antonia Duvaucey de Nittis.
